Both these examples have resulted in major change to either the law (Gay Rights) or constitution (Aboriginal Rights). In doing so they gained more human rights and being gay or Aboriginal has become a generally accepted part of society, although homophobia and racism still exists.
Protest can help people who are in a minority. I think these examples show the importance of protest. Protest is my way - our way - of being heard, making a change and doing what we believe is right. I'm 11, I can't vote, sign petitions or run for parliament. Protest is my only way of contributing to democracy and the consequences of protest is undeniable.
But the Tasmanian government is trying to introduce new, draconian laws restricting Tasmanians' ability to protest. Protestival was an event held in Hobart to Protest against these new laws.
Imagine what could have happened had these protests not been allowed to occur. These people have had their rights restored. Nothing would have been changed without the power of protest.
